Cost guide

iOS app development cost in 2026

An iOS budget is not just engineering hours. It is Apple's fees and commission, subscription plumbing, privacy declarations, review risk and the maintenance every September brings. This guide gives real 2026 cost bands, the Apple-specific line items generic estimates miss, and the decisions that move the number most.

I write this from the delivery side. I am Shahid Hussain, a mobile and full-stack product engineer in Islamabad with 6+ years of production work and 25+ apps shipped to the App Store, covering the app, the backend, subscriptions, AI features and the store launch.

iOS app cost bands in 2026

Total delivery cost: scope, design, build, testing and App Store launch for an experienced engineer or team.

Prototype for TestFlight

One workflow, real data, a build you can hand to testers or investors.

$5,000 - $12,000

Single-purpose iPhone app

One core job done well, light or no backend, straightforward App Review path.

$10,000 - $30,000

Subscription product

Accounts, backend, StoreKit 2 subscriptions, notifications, analytics, onboarding.

$30,000 - $80,000

Complex or multi-platform Apple product

AI features, real-time sync, widgets and Live Activities, watchOS or macOS companions.

$80,000 - $200,000+

Rates behind these figures run roughly $25 to $65 per hour in South Asia, $45 to $80 in Eastern Europe, $75 to $135 in Western Europe and $95 to $180 in North America.

Apple-specific line items

These items exist on iOS specifically, and they are the ones missing from generic app estimates.

Developer Program membership

$99 per year, in your own name. It is what allows TestFlight distribution and App Store publication, and it should never sit in a contractor's account.

Store commission

30 percent on in-app purchases and subscriptions, 15 percent in the second subscription year and under the Small Business Program. Model this before you set your price, not after.

StoreKit 2 subscription work

Purchase flows, subscription groups, introductory and promotional offers, transaction verification, restore and server-side entitlement checks. Commonly 15 to 30 hours on its own.

Privacy manifests and App Review

Privacy nutrition labels, tracking permission, required-reason API declarations and answering review questions. Small in hours, expensive in delay when it is skipped.

Apple platform extensions

Widgets, Live Activities, App Intents and Siri, share extensions, watchOS companions. Each is a separate target with its own build, testing and review surface.

Device and OS coverage

Current and previous iPhone sizes, Dynamic Island layouts, iPad if supported, Dark Mode, Dynamic Type and VoiceOver. Cheaper than Android fragmentation, not free.

What drives the number up or down

Backend depth

A local-only app is dramatically cheaper than one with accounts, sync and an admin panel. Managed services cut this cost more than any other single decision.

Number of user roles

Every extra role multiplies screens, permissions and test cases. Two roles is roughly one and a half times the work of one, not twice, but it is never free.

Design ambition

System components and a consistent design system are fast. Bespoke motion, custom charts and illustration-heavy onboarding are not.

AI features

Model calls are simple; the cost sits in prompt design, streaming, failure handling, abuse limits and the per-request bill that grows with usage.

Integrations you do not control

Payment providers, health data, banking APIs, hardware and legacy systems. Budget extra for the ones with poor documentation or a manual approval step.

Compliance

Health, finance and children's apps carry review, data-handling and audit requirements that add real weeks regardless of how simple the interface looks.

How to keep an iOS budget honest

  • Get the quote broken into scope, design, app, backend, testing and launch, and compare those parts rather than the total.
  • Freeze the first release to one core workflow and put everything else in a written phase two.
  • Own the repository, the App Store Connect account and the signing certificates from day one.
  • Ask for a TestFlight build within the first three weeks, then every week after.
  • Agree a monthly maintenance figure before launch instead of negotiating it during an outage.
  • Set aside 10 to 15 percent for the fixes the first month of real users will produce.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an iOS app cost in 2026?

A single-purpose iPhone app typically costs $10,000 to $30,000. A subscription product with accounts and a backend runs $30,000 to $80,000. A complex iOS product with AI, real-time data or multiple Apple platforms starts around $80,000. A TestFlight-ready prototype can be built for $5,000 to $12,000.

What are the fixed Apple costs?

The Apple Developer Program is $99 per year. Apple takes 30 percent commission on in-app purchases and subscriptions, dropping to 15 percent in the second year of a subscription and for developers in the Small Business Program earning under one million dollars per year. Those are unavoidable and belong in your model from day one.

Does SwiftUI make iOS apps cheaper to build?

Generally yes for new work. Screens take less code and less time than the UIKit equivalent, and the same views can carry a widget, a watchOS companion and a Mac build. The saving disappears when an existing UIKit codebase has to be bridged, which adds integration work rather than removing it.

Is iOS more expensive than Android?

Build cost is broadly similar. iOS is often slightly cheaper to test because the device matrix is smaller, and slightly more demanding at release because App Review can reject a build. Revenue per user is usually higher on iOS, which is why most subscription products launch there first.

What ongoing cost should I plan for?

Budget 15 to 25 percent of the build cost per year. Every September a new iOS version arrives and something needs attention: deprecated APIs, layout changes, new privacy requirements or a store policy update. Apps without a maintenance budget quietly break.

How do I avoid paying twice for the same work?

Own the repository, the App Store Connect account and the signing certificates from the first day. Insist that code is pushed as it is written rather than delivered at the end. Most expensive restarts happen because the previous team owned something the client needed.
