How to hire a React Native developer
React Native is a good way to put one product on both stores with one codebase. It is also a place where a strong web React developer can look qualified and still stall on signing, native modules and store review. This guide covers engagement models, 2026 rates, the skills that actually predict delivery, and a vetting process you can run in two weeks.
I write this from the delivery side. I am Shahid Hussain, a mobile and full-stack product engineer in Islamabad with 6+ years of production work and 25+ apps shipped to the App Store, covering the app, the backend, payments, AI features and the store launch.
Choose the engagement model first
Decide how you want to buy the work before you compare candidates. Most bad hires are really bad engagement choices.
Fixed scope for a defined v1
Best when the product is written down and the launch date matters more than flexibility. Agree the feature list, both store releases and a fixed price, with a short change order process.
Dedicated monthly retainer
Best when the roadmap will move. You buy an agreed block of a developer's month and reprioritise weekly. Most cross-platform teams end up here after v1.
Hourly maintenance
Best for a live app: React Native and Expo SDK upgrades, OS releases, store policy changes and small features. Cheap to hold, but not how a new product gets shipped.
Agency team
Best for programmes with several parallel workstreams. You pay for project management overhead that a single-product build rarely needs.
What React Native work costs in 2026
Ranges below are typical market rates for mid to senior React Native developers. Cross-platform rates usually sit slightly below deep native iOS rates.
United States and Canada
Same time zone, highest cost, strongest contract protection.
$90 - $165 / hour
Western Europe
Mature process, hours overlapping the UK and the US East coast.
$70 - $125 / hour
Eastern Europe
Large React and TypeScript talent pool at mid cost.
$40 - $75 / hour
South Asia (including Pakistan and India)
Lowest cost per shipped feature, widest quality spread, so vet hard.
$25 - $60 / hour
A dedicated monthly retainer usually lands between $3,200 and $13,000. Budget fifteen to twenty percent of build cost per year for upgrades: React Native and Expo move quickly, and a skipped year of upgrades is expensive to catch up.
React Native skills to test for
React experience alone does not make a mobile developer. These are the areas where weak hires fail after the demo looks fine.
TypeScript and React fundamentals
Hooks and effect dependencies, render behaviour, memoisation used deliberately rather than everywhere, and strict typing across API boundaries. Sloppy effects become battery and jank problems on device.
New Architecture literacy
Fabric, TurboModules and the bridgeless runtime. Ask what broke during a real migration, which libraries had to be replaced, and how they verified performance afterwards.
Navigation and deep links
React Navigation structure, nested stacks, state restoration, universal and app links, and push notification routing into the right screen. Deep link bugs surface only in production.
Lists and animation performance
Large list virtualisation, image caching and decoding, Reanimated worklets running off the JS thread, and gesture handling. Ask for a measured before and after on a janky screen.
Native module fluency
Reading Xcode and Gradle errors, config plugins, permissions, and patching or writing a native module when no maintained package exists. This is the most common single point of failure.
Offline and data layer
React Query or similar caching, optimistic updates, local persistence, background sync and conflict handling. Mobile networks are unreliable by default, not by exception.
Payments and subscriptions
In-app purchases on both stores, restore, trials and introductory offers, and server-side verification. Handling this on only one platform is a frequent oversight.
Builds and release
EAS or self-hosted CI, code signing, TestFlight and Play internal testing, staged rollout, over-the-air update policy and crash reporting with readable source maps.
A vetting process that works
1. Write the outcome, not the ticket list
State the product, the users, both launch platforms and the definition of done. Outcome framing gets you honest estimates.
2. Screen shipped apps, not repositories
Ask for live App Store and Play links. Install them. Check ratings, update history and whether they stayed through several post-launch versions.
3. Ask about a real upgrade
Have them walk through a React Native or Expo SDK upgrade they ran on a production app: what broke, what they replaced, how long it took.
4. Pay for a short trial task
Two to five days on a real slice of your product, delivered as a pull request plus builds on both platforms. One merged feature beats three interviews.
5. Review the diff and the builds
Read the code for component structure, effect discipline, typing and tests, then check that installable builds reached testers without you being involved.
6. Settle ownership before kickoff
Repository, both store accounts, signing credentials, EAS project, backend infrastructure and API keys stay in your name, with a written handover agreed up front.

Red flags
- No store apps you can install and open today.
- Has never opened the ios or android folder of a project.
- Cannot name a library they had to replace during a version upgrade.
- Treats over-the-air updates as a way to skip store review rules.
- Ships one platform and calls the other a later phase without saying so up front.
- Quotes a firm price before asking anything about your users.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to hire a React Native developer?
Typical 2026 rates for mid to senior React Native developers are about $25 to $60 per hour in South Asia, $40 to $75 in Eastern Europe, $70 to $125 in Western Europe and $90 to $165 in North America. A dedicated monthly retainer commonly lands between $3,200 and $13,000, and a cross-platform first version with accounts, a core workflow, subscriptions and both store launches is commonly $18,000 to $50,000.
React Native or Flutter?
Choose React Native when your team already writes TypeScript and React, when you want to share logic with a web app, or when you rely on the JavaScript package ecosystem. Choose Flutter when you want tighter control of rendering and animation and fewer native module surprises. Both ship excellent production apps; hire for delivery record rather than framework loyalty.
Should the developer use Expo or bare React Native?
Expo with development builds and EAS is the sensible default in 2026: config plugins let you use native modules without ejecting, and EAS handles builds and submissions. Bare workflow is justified when you need deep custom native code or an existing native app is adopting React Native incrementally.
Does a React Native developer still need native skills?
Yes. Every serious React Native project eventually touches Xcode and Gradle: signing, permissions, push setup, a native module that does not have a maintained wrapper, and store review questions. A developer who cannot open the native projects will stall at the worst moment.
What is the New Architecture and why does it matter?
Fabric, TurboModules and the JSI-based bridgeless runtime are now the default. It affects library compatibility, performance and upgrade planning. Ask candidates what broke when they migrated a real app and how they resolved it.
How long does a React Native app take to build?
A focused first version on both platforms typically takes eight to fourteen weeks to a live listing. Cross-platform saves build time, not release time: you still handle two store submissions, two review processes and two sets of platform requirements.
